Markus Larsson, founder and executive director, recognized the lack of available affordable financial services for the financially poor while volunteering for several nonprofits serving poor populations in the Washington, DC area. In 2011, he and several leaders of local nonprofits serving low-income populations founded Life Asset as a non-predatory financial resource center for low-income people in the Washington, DC area.
Markus has over 15 years of experience starting and developing small companies both nationally and internationally, including product development, sales and marketing, and raising capital. Markus moved from Sweden to the USA to establish a subsidiary to a Swedish satellite communications company. During its six years of rapid expansion, Markus gained valuable experience establishing and operating a small business in the US and managing the successful acquisition of the company by a US company traded on the NY Stock Exchange. Among his many management consulting assignments, he assisted executive managers and board of directors in business environment analysis, strategic development and change management. He holds an M.Sc. in engineering and an MBA.
John Kavyavu, senior loan officer, joined Life Asset in July 2014. John’s experience includes six years as a director at Pro-Microfinance International, a US-based nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for social and economic empowerment to poor people (primarily women and children) in some of the most inaccessible and underserved regions of Africa. John is also the founder of the Congolese Diaspora Mutual Funds, an impact investment platform that helps the Congolese diaspora to channel its small and hard earned investments in knowledge (brain gain) and money to high-impact businesses in their home country. John has consulted with World Vision International and CAUSE Washington, DC. He is also an English-French/French-English freelance translator/interpreter.
